1 - “Echigo-ya and the Dishonest Magistrate” is a skit commonly found in Japanese period plays and is a satire on stereotypical corrupt behaviour. The scene is intended to evoke the imagery of a seedy merchant (Echigo-ya) buttering up to a depraved authority, complete with classic villainous lines and laughter.
