Watabe: (Sigh…… I’ve finally reached a point where I can pause my work.)

(I guess I’ll bring the rest home with me to do……)

Watabe: Hmm……? A stall at the shrine?

(Oh right, today’s New Year’s Eve.)

…… Even a small place such as this was probably lively all day today.

Hattori: Goodness, it’s Watanabe-kun.

Did Matori-chan turn you down for you to be trudging along at this hour?

Watabe: Haha, it’s Watabe, and not Watanabe.

(How many times is he going to make me say it…?)

And don’t worry, I’m getting along smoothly with that girl just as always.

Hattori: My my, that’s a shame then. Well, leaving that aside…

It must be fate for us to run into each other on the last day of the year.

Watabe: No kidding. If I was going to meet anyone, then I would’ve wanted it to be her.

Hattori: Well, how about joining me for a drink while you’re at it then?

Watabe: Is that…… sake?

Hattori: Bingo~ It’s the sacred sake that this shrine was distributing.

It’s good enough to wet your lips over and it brings fortune too, so why not accept it?

Watabe: You have a point there. Well then, just one cup will do.

(I still have work to do after all. I’ll pretend to drink as if I’ve had my fill, then I’ll take my leave……)

Hattori: ……

You really are devoted to your work, Watanabe-kun.

Watabe: ! No way, whatever could you mean all of the sudden?

Hattori: I’m sure that everyone has their own way of spending New Year’s Eve.

But isn’t it truly a waste to go home as it is and then completely end the year by working?

Watabe: (So he’s saying that I should take a small break then?)

…… Haha. There’s no one who can go up against you, Hattori-san.

I’m just warning you though, I can’t guarantee what’ll happen if I get drunk, you know?

Hattori: Well, if it comes to that then I’ll call in Matori-chan for support.

Watabe: Tsk tsk, if you say something like that then I can’t go getting drunk any more.

(...... But having said that, it’s not so bad to spend the last day of the year like this.)

All the while thinking that he would probably be depending on the other man for all the good and slightly bad times next year as well…

The diplomat spent the whole of New Year’s Eve engulfed in a pleasant sensation.
